DEFINITION OF KARAOKE

Karaoke (pronounced carry-oh-key)
Derived from the Japanese words kara(empty)and oke(orchestra). Karaoke supposedly got its start in Japan during popular all-girl singing revues in the 1960s that used an orchestra. When one of the orchestras returned from a strike, the owner recorded their performance. The next time the orchestra walked out, he played the tape and the girls sang to the background of an "empty orchestra"
